Nicaraguan-based Cubanacan Cigars has released a new line of cigars called simply HR, which happen to be the initials of the cigar’s blender, Hirochi Robaina.
Hirochi Robaina is the grandson of the legendary cigar maker Alejandro Robaina (dubbed the “Godfather of Cuban tobacco”). Hirochi was born in Alquízar in La Habana Province of Cuba but he grew up and lived most of his life in the renowned tobacco-growing Vuelta Abajo district of Pinar del Río Province where his family had been growing tobacco since 1845. Hirochi took over the operations of the plantation after the death of his father Maruto Robaina. The tobacco leaves from Robaina’s plantations are often considered among the best in the world and have been used by high quality cigars brands such as Cohiba and Hoyo de Monterrey. Before he passed away, Alejandro left a hand written note saying, “Hirochi, you are my hope, you can’t fail me.” Since that time, Hirochi has not let his grandfather down.
Hirochi vowed to continue his grandfather’s legacy of cigars and has continued doing so since that day. Omar González Alemán, Cubanacan’s master blender who previously worked in Cuba’s cigar industry, wanted to create a cigar to honor his legacy and approached the younger Robaina in 2011 regarding the idea. HR uses an Ecuadorian Maduro wrapper grown from Habano 2000 seed, a Nicaraguan binder from the Jalapa Valley and filler consisting of Nicaraguan leaves from Jalapa and Estelí. Expanding his horizons, HR is a full-bodied cigar rich in flavor and an exquisite aroma that will surely please your palate.
This cigar has an evenly colored wrapper with some tooth and a heavy rich pre-light smell of earthiness and soft spice at the foot. It possesses a nice, oily brown color and it was smooth to the touch and aromatic.
1st quarter: From the start, there was creamy texture to the smoke with some peppery notes through the nose. You will find an incredibly smooth draw with the only the slightest resistance. HR delivers full flavored smoke right up front. 2nd quarter: The cigar produced a super rich aroma filled with notes of cedar, cocoa and some spice. Dense clouds of full flavored smoke filled the air. 3rd quarter: The aroma and flavor continued to develop and intensify, giving a very rich and full flavor. It has a truly luring character with a subtle yet present full body and flavor. 4th quarter: Along with full spice and body, there were plenty of consistent sweet tones balanced by tobacco notes. The cigar packed a punch that offered big flavor to match. It was a wonderful journey in intensity with lots of creaminess along the way.
Final Thoughts: The HR Hermoso is a cigar that grows in its complexity all the way down to the nub. It was very flavorful throughout and offered a long and creamy finish. It is an extremely well made, elegant cigar with an unmistakable full body. Truly effortless to enjoy and it will leave you with a long lasting impression.
