Cohiba: “the selection of the selection”
In 1966, Cohiba emerged as a Habanos brand, vertiginously becoming the most prestigious brand in the cigar world. “El Laguito”, a beautiful and enigmatic house located in the residential zone of Cubanacán, in the city of La Habana, became the factory of these so very valuable cigars.
In the early years of Cohiba, these Habanos were destined solely to be presented as gifts of the Cuban Government to Heads of State, diplomatic representations and personalities at world level.
In 1982, Cohiba became available in the international markets, though always in limited quantities. It was immediately considered the flagship brand among all Cuban cigar brands. It has been recognized at world level as “the selection of the selection” of the best Cuban cigars, because it is manufactured with leaves from the best tobacco plantations in San Juan y Martínez and San Luis in the region of Vuelta Abajo, and because it is the only brand in which two of the leaves undergo a third fermentation.
During more than 40 years of existence, the Cohiba brand has had a coherent and harmonious development, always responding to the preferences of its most demanding and faithful smokers, and at the same time it has set guidelines and trends with its different Líneas in the world of Premium cigars at international level.
In 2006 a humidor of a special design and construction was made to celebrate the 40 years of the creation of Cohiba (1966-2006). Under the name Cohiba Behike, only 100 numbered humidors were produced, with 40 Habanos each. Among the main attributes that made these humidors something definitely special were its unique and exclusive design, the making of all its habanos by the experienced cigar roller Norma Fernández, founder of the emblematic factory “El Laguito”, and the second ring, numbered and marked with the name “Behike” that dressed up each one of the cigars. The humidor was the tribute earned by Cohiba because of the quality and prestige sustained for more than four decades. The selected vitola had a unique and exclusive format according to the requirements of exclusivity of such celebration upon the brand. These Habanos were considered “the most expensive cigars in the world”.
Behike: Cohiba’s Best Kept Secret
Cohiba was the first name given to tobacco. When Christopher Columbus arrived in Cuba in 1492 he saw that the Taino Indians, inhabitants of these lands, used to light some rolled leaves which they called “cohiba” and which they later smoked following a ritual. As registered in the chronicles and travel diaries, that ceremony was conducted by a highly respected person of the group, who was called “Behike”.
“Cohiba’s best kept secret” is finally disclosed in 2010 during the XII Habanos Festival. A new Línea Cohiba appears in the market: the Línea Behike, which ought to be the most exclusive línea of the brand and which will accompany the other líneas already existing in Cohiba.
“Habanos, S.A. presents Cohiba Behike, which will be the most exclusive línea of the most prestigious Habanos brands, with three new formats: BHK 52, BHK 54 y BHK 56.Cohiba Behike, whose production will be extremely limited, incorporates for the first time in the blend of its three vitolas the tobacco leaf called “medio tiempo” that grants it exceptional character and flavor. Each and every one of Cohiba Behike Habanos also incorporates a band with two holograms for security identification.”
Cohiba Behike will be produced each year in extremely limited quantities. Its blend incorporates for the first time the “Medio Tiempo”, a leaf that attributes to the cigar exceptional character and flavor. Cohiba, the Habanos brand selected to incorporate the Medio Tiempo to its blend starts to lead again the trends in the world of cigars, as it is traditional for this vanguard brand.
Also denominated Fortaleza 4, the Medio Tiempo is a very scarce leaf coming from the two upper leaves of the sun-grown tobacco plant. However, not all these plants produce both. The sufficient availability of Medio Tiempo to be used in regular productions depends of the dedication, care and attention paid to each tobacco plantation and growing of each plant, considering the changing climatic conditions as well.
Due to the foliar position in the plant, the flavor and fortaleza of the Habano concentrate with greater intensity in the leaves of “Medio Tiempo”.
Cohiba Behike will be a benchmark exponent among the Habanos with the greatest flavor and aromas. The new vitolas will be produced each year in extremely limited quantities due to the natural scarcity of the Medio Tiempo tobacco leaf.
The three vitolas of the new Línea Cohiba Behike are:
- –BHK 52: 52 ring gauge 52 (20,64 mm) x 119mm length. Factory name: Laguito No 4.
- –BHK 54: 54 ring gauge 54 (21,43 mm) x 144mm length. Factory name: Laguito No 5.
- –BHK 56: 56 ring gauge (22,22 mm) x166mm length. Factory name: Laguito No 6.
. Each one of the vitolas is presented in an exclusive 10-cigar lacquered box.
.The Behike bands bear the Cohiba Indian head in an embossed holographic paper, including an exclusive security hologram in each one.
Not only its blend and the boxes are exclusive, the three new formats of Cohiba Behike have not existed in Cohiba or in Habanos before.
The Behike band incorporates for the first time an embossed holographic paper and an exclusive hologram that authenticates these exclusive Habanos.
The selected formats are exclusive of Cohiba Behike. Their heavy ring gauge, in addition to provide excellent burn, will allow the smoker to appreciate and enjoy all the intensity and flavors offered by this exquisite and unique blend.

Cohiba Behike is the ultimate expression of the taste and aroma of the Habano.
