2015 Cigars & Golf Journey “Fun golf courses to play”
Tahquitz Creek Resort Golf Course Palm Springs, CA
Famed designer Ted Robinson Sr. applied his philosophy of letting nature take it course in 1995 for the City of Palm Springs. This modern desert layout rivals most other desert courses in the valley for it uniqueness, use of natural surroundings, and playability. Ted Robinson and his environmentally friendly concepts are held true with this design. The use of natural draught tolerant desert landscape, reclaimed irrigation, and recycled materials like used tires for mounding are an intricate part of the Resort.
The layout features an island fairway, multiple water features combined with flowers and magnificent views of surrounding mountains. Most noted for it’s fairness to all golfers, the Resort is just over 6,700 yards has 4 set of tees for various handicaps and can play as short as 5,200 yards.
This links style course has 2 holes that share a large green and consist of holes that go out towards the San Jacinto Mountains and return home to the clubhouse reminiscent of an “old country” design. Running parallel to the Palm Canyon Wash it also has 3 holes that play over the Tahquitz Canyon wash.
Bethpage Black Course Farmingdale, NY
The Black Course is a difficult and challenging course that should be played only by low-handicap golfers. The course is for walkers only and its slope rating is one of the highest in the northeast. Anyone who has played will tell you it is a true test of golf skill and physical endurance. This was one of the last courses designed by master golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, and is said by many to be his finest work. The Black Course served as the site of the 102nd U.S. Open Championship in 2002, and again at the 109th U.S. Open in 2009. The Barclays is scheduled to be played here in 2012, adding another major event to the list played at Bethpage. The narrow fairways, high roughs, well placed bunkers and small greens help to make this an extremely difficult course. It regularly ranks among the best courses in the country. Golfweek rated it the #1 best municipal course for 09-10, and again in 10-11, and it made their list of the top 100 classic American golf courses. It also made the Golf Digest’s top 100 American public and private course list in 2005, and was number 7 on their Top 100 American Public Courses. Golf Magazine included it on their Top 100 Courses in the World, and ranked it 10th in the Top Courses Since 1959. Every serious golfer should test their skills, and what better place to do it than the Black?

Hunter Ranch Golf Course, Paso Robles, CA. “Tucked in the rolling hills of Paso Robles”
Located in San Luis Obispo County’s wine country two hours south of Pebble Beach and 25 miles east of Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Hunter ranch is a year old track that harks back to the classic designs of Alister Mackenzie–with a decidedly Aussie twist. Developed by the owner of Sandpiper and La Purisima, two Santa Barbara-area courses ranked among the top public layouts in the state.
Hunter Ranch is a true rarity: An affordable, high-quality, daily fee layout without a brand-name designer label. Co-designers Ken Hunter and Mike McGinnis, assisted by a pair of superintendents, moved very little dirt in creating a strategic layout routed through century-old blue oak trees. Dozens of flash-faced bunkers (the Mackenzie influence) and liberally contoured, hand-shaped bent grass greens, several of them sited well above fairway level, mark the design.
Overlooking the oak-lined fairways, none of which run parallel, are are clubhouse and restaurant buildings designed to resemble Australian outback ranch houses. Somehow, the rough redwood siding, tin roofs, and spacious covered porches fit in here.

Skywest Golf Course in Hayward, CA. “Par-72 municipal course”
Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them at Skywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when it debuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though large greens tend to play true.
The par-3s all play long at 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay them attention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recently augmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens have just been rebuilt to complement the dramatic 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened in 2005. What hasn’t changed are the incredible rates that can get you on the course with a cart for as low as $25 weekdays—with many other specials that can sweeten your day.
