Habanos, S.A. has unveiled the Montecristo Fragata, a new luxury travel humidor designed for Habano aficionados on the move. Announced on October 1, 2026, during the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes, France, the release expands Montecristo’s legacy with an exclusive offering tailored specifically for the Duty-Free and Travel Retail channels.

Founded in Havana in 1935, Montecristo has become one of the most recognized and appreciated brands in the Habanos portfolio. Known for its distinctive flavor and international reputation, the brand recently celebrated its 90th anniversary.

Montecristo takes its name from The Count of Monte Cristo, the celebrated novel by Alexandre Dumas. The literary connection remains an important part of the brand’s identity, linking its history to Cuban culture and the craftsmanship behind its Habanos.

The name Fragata evokes the ships featured in the novel, reflecting themes of travel, discovery, and adventure. With this new release, Montecristo connects its storied past with the spirit of exploration.

A New Habano Designed for Travel

The Montecristo Fragata travel humidor contains 20 Montecristo Fragata Habanos, introducing a new vitola to the brand’s portfolio.

Produced in the Duke factory format, each cigar measures 54 ring gauge by 140 mm in length. The cigars feature the classic Montecristo blend and are described as medium-to-full strength.

Each Habano is Totalmente a Mano con Tripa Larga — totally handmade with long filler — using tobacco leaves selected from the Vuelta Abajo area of Pinar del Río, Cuba, a region renowned for the quality of its tobacco.

A special foot band bearing the Fragata vitola name further distinguishes the cigar and reinforces the exclusivity of this release.

Montecristo Fragata Tasting Notes

The official tasting notes describe a cigar that develops in complexity as the smoking experience progresses.

First Third: The cigar opens with a smooth, creamy draw accompanied by woody notes and pleasant flavors. Its characteristic intensity has not yet fully emerged.

Second Third: Woody aromas become more pronounced, joined by subtle smoky notes, hints of leather, and a slight coffee undertone. The flavor and body grow more complex.

Final Third: Montecristo’s characteristic flavors and medium-strong intensity become more apparent as the profile develops additional complexity.
