Cohiba is one of the select cigar brands that has to go head to head in the international market with itself, competing with its Cuban counterpart. That is rarefied company indeed, but the Dominican Cohiba is certainly equal to the challenge. The Dominican manufacturer Diaz y Cia proclaims Cohiba as “a world beyond other cigars.” It is no idle boast – they back it up and the rest of the cigar world knows it. This is one of those rare products about which little needs to be said. Cohiba – its reputation alone sells it.
For the first time in Cohiba history, they have released their Nicaraguan cigar. Aptly named “Cohiba Nicaragua”, this cigar is made in Nicaragua at the Scandinavian Tobacco Group Esteli S.A factor, and contains mostly Nicaraguan tobacco. The blend starts with a Honduran sun-grown wrapper that the company classifies as Colorado Oscuro in color. Underneath, a binder leaf from Nicaraguan tobacco from Esteli.
There was an evenly dark, hearty, and rich brown wrapper with an oily sheen and a silky feel. It has a rich and sweet pre-light smell.
1st quarter: Once lit, the cigar produced a lot of smoke at the foot. Its draw developed into big earthy flavors and was incredibly smooth, allowing incredibly full flavor to come right through to the palate. Right away, you will find there is spice through the nose. 2nd quarter: The draw delivered a full flavored character right from the start. Creamy smoke wafted from the cigar along with continuously developing spices. Big texture along with bold flavors and aroma continued to fill the air. Its flaky ash grew over time and held on for about an inch. 3rd quarter: A very smooth draw with great construction made this cigar truly effortless to smoke. Spices intensified through the nose and in the smoke. 4th quarter: In this last portion, the cigar offered full flavors with a lot of spices and sweet earthiness. Despite its ongoing big flavor profile, it remained extremely well-balanced and maintained its great construction from start to finish.
The Cohiba Nicaragua offers full body with intense flavors. It is incredibly rich and full in its aroma which, along with its construction, really makes this cigar stand out in front. It produced a dark gray ash along with a very even burn. It is an effortless smoke, offering a well-rounded mouth-feel.
